The BYU Industrial Design Department hosts an annual symposium and student show. It provides an opportunity for students and professionals to network, participate in student portfolio reviews, engage in presentations given by successful professionals, as well as afford inspiration and growth for all who attend.

Meet Our Guest Speakers

Todd Register

Todd leads the design effort for the Outdoor segment at Garmin, blending cutting edge technology with adventure gear. He is a firm believer that good design is essential in creating meaningful and emotional products. Recent programs include the Fenix and Chronos adventure watch lines. Winner of the Red Dot Design Award, CES Innovation Award and holds many design and utility patents. Todd recently earned his MFA in Design Management from the University of Kansas and has a BFA in Industrial Design from Brigham Young University. Mountain biking, camping and spending time with his wife and kids all help to keep the batteries recharged.

Lauren Purkhiser

Lauren is a design researcher at Lextant in Columbus, Ohio where she consults on a varying range of research studies utilizing qualitative co-creation methods to gleam insights from information.
She recently graduated with honors from the Industrial Design program at Columbus College of Art & Design where she was named the Outstanding Industrial Design Senior of 2015. Lauren has worked on and led a multitude of cross-disciplinary design teams. Most notable of which was the CCAD Airstream Pursuit concept trailer. She has displayed and presented the trailer concept with CCAD at conferences like the IDSA International and Dwell on Design.
She sees design as a way to solve complex problems guided by user derived insights in order to create elegant solutions that improve the human experience.

Mackenzie King

Mackenzie King’s ability to engage customers to drive innovation spans fields from healthcare to education to transportation. She’s helped leading companies listen to and integrate customers’ voices to fuel the innovation process.
She led physicians to design smart devices that integrate into hospital informatics, and worked with students to co-create a New York City arts high school. Working with Millennials, King developed a forecast for mobility solutions.
King is director of design research and insight translation at Lextant. Her clients have included Best Buy, Nissan, P&G and PepsiCo. She holds a BID from Pratt Institute and an MBA from Case Western Reserve University.
